In Closed for Good? The “Retail Apocalypse” in Britain since 2005, I mentioned Thanet’s expanding retail estates around Westwood Cross, opened after 2000 and closing ever since. Here are two of them.
On one, Laura Ashley remains closed five years later, as does what used to be PC World, since consolidated with Curry’s next door. I can’t remember whether the indoor playground between them ever opened as a shop at all.
Across the roundabout, a large Homebase, where I worked more than a decade ago, stands boarded up next to a large charity shop which used to be Argos. Aldi was Sports Direct, which moved into a smaller unit nearby when it was vacated by Smyths Toys, and Maplin.
