I wanted to sell Closed for Good? The “Retail Apocalypse” in Britain since 2005 for less than my other books, and to offer it as an e-book, so to keep the cost down, I’m posting the photos here, instead of including them in the book.
I took them all within five miles of my home – which is not even in a city – to make a point. The collapse of British retail is not diffuse: it’s right on our doorsteps. It’s local.
I thought I’d start with one of the biggest: Woolworths in Margate, Cliftonville, and Ramsgate. Ramsgate became 99p Stores, who themselves went under and were replaced by Poundland, moving from across the street. So here too is what Poundland left behind.
