Closed for Good? The “Retail Apocalypse” in Britain since 2005 is almost entirely about chains, which have greater impact on the country and the industry as a whole. One of the bigger failures of the period was of course Debenhams.
We had one in Thanet, anchoring the shopping centre at Westwood Cross along with M&S and Primark. Visually one of the most prominent businesses on the island, dominating the roundabout which gives the centre its name, Debenhams sat empty for about three years after the company collapsed in 2021.
