When I was using 3D to make comics, I used to talk about what I called “burying the render”: treating the artwork in such a way that it wasn’t apparent that CGI had even been used. This wasn’t to disguise the fact – I was open about that – but to eliminate the plastic look of the raw renders and produce something resembling conventional illustration. The writing – as it often is in comics – was secondary.
Visually, some of my experiments were more successful than others. Almost accidentally, I think I also produced some okay stories, and once or twice, I might have managed both at once.
