How it's done
I usually work to "bury the render" - to cover up the 3D origin of most of my images - but Frankly goes the other way. Lush, garish 3D just seemed to suit the little oik. Elsewhere, I started by trying to to mimic the style of traditional media, then played with it until I achieved a finish I liked. Because character is so important in these, modelling Ogilvy and the YFS cast especially was a significant part of the work.
Ideas
Funny comes from all over. I drew Bad Santa before 3D as we know it even existed, while YFS started life as a sitcom. Both Bruce and Frankly were inspired by the 3D models themselves - Frankly's baleful scowl, and Bruce's scribbly charm - while Ogilvy... well, I've worked in business. 'Nuff said
